“What is the definition of a good wine? It should start and end with a smile.” William Sokolin
There are wineries here where I live in Hermann Missouri. We're very fortunate. The wineries are a big part of the local economy. The wineries bring tourists who spend money on rooms, and food and drink. All of those things employ a significant number of our neighbors. Hermann and the surrounding wine country reminds me of Napa Valley 50 years ago. There is a growing wine and tourist industry that continues to cause the wines to be better and the area to sustain economic health. Often, when we have guests visiting from afar, we take them on a winery tour. I have been so many times, I could give the tour myself. The kids who are the tour guides must hate me for always telling them some little bit o...

I try to put everything I have learned from every great teacher and through every mistake I have made into each and every piece with as much passion as I have for art and for life itself. Artists have been accused of being self aggrandizing, long winded, name droppers. I hate it when the critics get it right! In an attempt to diffuse those kinds of accusations, regardless of how accurate they may be, I am writing this statement today. Each picture I make begins with a germ of an idea. I visualize how I...

Wow! I absolutely love this photograph. Outstanding! v6
William Fields replied:
Thanks Greg. Interesting story. The current owners of the winery began their tenure sometime in the mid 60s. These bottles are the remnants of the first wines they made.

Hi William, love this shot because it brings back a memory for me. Quite a few years ago when we were in our 20s, not widely traveled, and easily impressed, my husband and I dined at '21' in NYC. At the end of the meal, since we were some of the last remaining diners, our waiter offered us a tour of their private wine cellar hidden behind a secret stone door in the basement. It looked very much like this with bins containing private collections and labeled for an amazing number of celebrities including; Truman Capote, Aristotle Onassis, Richard Burton and many others of similar fame. Now that I am considerably older, much more widely traveled and more difficult to impress - I'm still impressed that he offered us that tour. This is indeed a photo that I appreciate! V/F
William Fields replied:
Great story Cheri. Thanks very much for your appreciation too! I really hope that Louise and I can some day meet you and your husband because I know we'd have some larks. Let us know if St. Louis gets on your itinerary and we'll do the same if N'awlins is in our future.
