Description
Representation of a feast in the Upper Paleolithic era, between 18, 000 and 10, 000 BP, towards the end of the last ice age. Men are engaged in cleaving the head of an auroch, the primordial wild ox, in order to extract and eat the still steaming brains. Others around the fire are cooking flesh from the same animal.Some are cracking the long bones of a reindeer in order to suck out the marrow. In this Magdalenian period, once called the Reindeer Epoch, the hunter-gatherers pursued wild animals as they migrated northwards. Reindeer was a major source of food, skins for garments and bones for weapons and implements. They also hunted and trapped horses, elks, ibis and chamois.
