Description
A Malay woman makes her way up a steep cobbled street in the Bo-Kaap which is an old quarter of Cape Town on the slope of Signal Hill. Her daughter stops to watch a dog on a nearby stoep. Pigeons peck at crumbs on the cobbles and seagulls fly high above. It is a hot summer morning with the bright light reflecting off the stuccoed houses and you sense the mother will be glad to get home. The houses are painted pink, pale green, pale yellow and white and some are run down with grass growing on the flat roofs. This gives you the atmosphere of this part of the city and how the older quarter contrasts attractively with the ultra modern skyscrapers of the city bowl or centre in the mid-distance.
