Description
Sugar cane irrigation. Water distribution system for a field of sugar cane, Saccharum officinarum, a bamboo-like tropical grass. Sugar cane needs lots of water to grow and therefore requires extensive irrigation. Water taken from other areas of Hawaii to meet this demand has led to damage to various environmentally-sensitive areas. Most of the world's sugar comes from sugar cane, and the plant is also needed for the production of golden syrup, treacle and rum. Sugar cane was introduced to Hawaii by the island's first settlers. Photographed in Maui, Hawaii, USA.
