This beautiful card arrived in no time at all, and I am very pleased with the quality. It is now inside a frame, and hangs below my reproduction of "Mrs. Henry Beaufoy" and next to the much larger "Morning Walk", which I bought in England many years ago. This completes my "Gainsborough Wall" for the moment, and is exactly the right size for the space I had left. I've been wanting a "Perdita" for many years!

Fun!

Artist's Description

Sugar mill machinery on display, historical artwork. This is the International Exhibition of 1862, held from May to October of that year, in London, UK. It was also called the Great London Exposition. This sugar mill was provided by Mirrlees and Tait of Glasgow, Scotland. A flywheel is at right, driving a set of cogs and gears, which in turn operate the grinding part of the mill (centre left). On the upper tier are large boilers. This exhibition had 28,000 exhibitors from 36 countries, representing industry, technology, and the arts. There were some 6.1 million visitors.

About George Bernard/science Photo Library

George Bernard/science Photo Library

Science Photo Library was founded in 1981 by Michael Marten, one of the authors of "Worlds Within Worlds", a book exploring different ways to observe the universe - from electron micrographs, to images of earthrise taken from the Apollo spacecraft. When Marten started receiving requests for the beautiful images in the book, he had an idea of setting up Science Photo Library. Since then, Science Photo Library has continued to work alongside world acclaimed photographers and the leading science and medical experts to provide a central source of the best science and specialist imagery available. Although the collection started with scientific images, it has grown to encompass all aspects of science and their impact on everyday life.
