Description
Childhood is a time like no other, and the memories it leaves are ones that we retain for our entire lives.
Ideally, childhood should be a time of freedom and joy – a time to daydream, to play, to pretend, at the same time that we interact, work with, and learn from the adults in our lives who care about us. Too many children these days, however, find their lives controlled and circumscribed, filled with long school days of many wearisome tasks, then, tired after a long day of sitting, they come home and play games on the computer or watch mindless drivel on TV.
The artwork, Summer Days, invites the viewer into a world of childhood that is what childhood should be. The young boy with the kite holds it easily across his shoulders as he wanders through the waving grass of a country field. The colorful kite, caught in the strength of the breeze, pulls and tugs as it tries to get away and soar high into the sky, but the boy hangs on.
The boy’s mind is elsewhere, and the kite, for now, is part of his daydreams, his thoughts, his gentle wanderings through the country hills. His very stance is one of ease and relaxation, resting in the knowledge that for now, there are no chores to do, no reports to write, no teachers to listen to. This day, this summer day, is one for wandering the hills with the kite, flying it or not, and feeling the sun on his face and the breeze brush across his legs.
This day, this summer day, is one that fills his mind and heart with the possibilities that are out there – the dragons to be slayed, the ships to sail across adventurous seas, the lands to conquer, and it is a day that will shape who this boy will become as he grows into a man.
We all need days like Summer Breeze, and if we did not get enough of them as children, we need to grab a kite, wander through the country fields, and create such a day for ourselves today.
