Yellowstone National Park is a United States national park located primarily in the state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone, widely held to be the first national park in the world, is reknown for its large variety of wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park. It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is dominant offering many different and unusual views throughout the entire park.
Midway Geyser Basin contains one of the most beautiful springs in the park appropriately named Grand Prismatic Spring. This viewpoint near a pulloff in the road allows the Firehole River to be illuminated at sunset and clearly shows the size of Midway Geyser Basin. Yellowstone experiences thousands of small earthquakes every year which are undectable to people visiting the park. These earthquakes have caused changes in many of the thermal features of the park and will continue to do so until such time as the active volcano underneath the surface finally erupts. Earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.5 have been recorded in this area.
