Description
Sunspot structure. Three-dimensional model of a sunspot (dark spot) based on data obtained by the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft. The top plane is the surface of the Sun, with the lower plane a slice at a depth of 22,000 kilometres. (km). The vertical plane extends down to a depth of 24,000km. The colours represent the sound speed in the Sun, with red being faster and blue slower. Sunspots are cooler areas that appear on the Sun's surface. They are associated with strong magnetic fields, and their frequency varies on an 11 year cycle.
