Artist's Description

Supernova SN 2006gy, artwork. A supernova is the explosive death of a massive star. This supernova is thought to be one of the brightest and most energetic ever observed. The initial stages of the supernova produced lobes of gas (red) expanding outwards from the star. The final, cataclysmic explosion (white) is pushing back the cooler gas, heating it in shockwaves (yellow and green). SN 2006gy is about 238 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Perseus. This artwork was based on observations made in 2006 by NASA's space-based Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) and ground-based optical telescopes.
