Description
Before 1996, Topsail had six fishing piers. Only three remain: SeaView Fishing Pier, Surf City Pier, and Jolly Roger Pier. Three were taken out by Hurricanes Bertha and Fran 1996: Barnacle Bill's, Ocean City, and Scotch Bonnet. I think the pier pictured here is the most photogenic of them all, because of its cathedral-like structure, it's like an island-representative of past and present, just like the swing bridge. However, we know what fate has in store for the swing bridge, even if it is a defining characteristic of the island.
The three remaining piers also contribute to familiarity on the island, and are symbolic of dependability and reliance, we all look for them as we pass by, and they somehow provide a comfort, remaining largely unchanged over the years, they remain contributing characters within the culture and story of Topsail.
