Description
Tectonic buckling of rock layers. Tectonic forces, together with vast periods of time, have combined to fold and buckle these rock layers (strata). The rocks here include limonite, a yellow ore that is a mixture of hydrated iron oxide and iron hydroxide, and alternating layers of sandstone (the thicker layers) and shale. The rocks date from the Carboniferous era (299 to 359 million years ago). Photographed in northern Cornwall, England.
