Description
This spectacular iconic bridge on the Central California coastline was built by hand in 1932 for nearly a whopping $200,000. The bridge is a reinforced concrete open spandrel arch bridge spanning 320 feet. It is made up of 45,000 sacks of cement that men had to haul up the framework by hand (this was before machinery was developed). This incredible bridge is 260 feet above the steep canyon below where Bixby Creek flows to the ocean. Sometimes this bridge is called the Bixby Creek Bridge or the Bixby Canyon Bridge. After completion of this large span it took another five years before this bridge was even used because the rest of the road along the rugged coastline wasn't finished yet. This portion of Highway1 near Big Sur in Monterey County links Carmel to San Luis Obispo. The drive is exhilarating with breathtaking Pacific views and many terrain changes.
