While many of us enjoy the idealized descriptions and images of the past, the wretchedness of history is most often glossed over or completely ignored.
This vintage-style photograph, shot in August 2009, illuminates one of the many dark chapters in Victorian-era history. It is a detail of the interior of a cordage factory, where people toiled in the freezing winters and stifling summers making rope for the seafaring industry. Young children, immigrants and the working poor labored side by side, with no protection from large cumbersome machinery, heat, cold, boiling tar, heights, intolerable noise and air filled with the detritus of fiber except their own wits.
