Though known as the Observatory, El Caracol contained no astronomical instrument, though was believed to be a perch, once part of an ancient cityscape and raised over the surrounding jungle, from which one could watch the cycles of Venus, the motion of which in the sky helped to mark the passage time in the Mayan calendar.
