Description
Windleshaw Chantry is said to be the oldest building in my home town of St Helens in Merseyside, UK. Dating back to 1415, this little church or chantry as it was known, was built by Sir Thomas Gerard a local Lord of The Manor, so that it could be used by his family as they roamed their large estate. Sadly only part of this charming old building remains due to unscrupulous people removing stone for their own building purposes. In bygone times no appreciation or sentimentality was shown by many individuals for the historic buildings in their area and little protection was offered by the law. Fortunately times have changed and the chantry is now classed as a Grade 2 listed building and is given protection by the law from any interference.

I wonder if anyone ever lived up there? They should insist that those people bring back the stones!
Anthony Lyon replied:
Many thanks for your comments Reynold. If only it was that easy to get the stones back. Sadly they will have been quietly incorporated into numerous buildings over time. It has happened to many old buildings in England. I personally blame King Henry VIII for starting it all when he shut down the monasteries and other religious buildings, encouraging all this destruction whilst helping himself to any valuables within.
