This large mask, called Giganton, was worn on the back of the dancer. Quetzalcoatl to the Aztec, Kuku- lcan to the Maya, the plumed serpent was a symbol of the vision serpent, the instrument by which the king communicated with the ancestors. Quetzalcoatl was also the planet Venus. Moctezuma should have known that the exiled Quetzalcoatl would return from the east as the morning star, not as Hernan Cortes. The rattlesnake is the likely source of the plumed serpent cult. It has been asserted that the Mayan nobility altered the heads of their children, in a very painful procedure, so that their heads resembled that of the rattlesnake. The carved serpent upon which the Aztec couple are standing, from a painting by Jesus de la Helgera, and the feather mask in front bear little resemblance to the ancient Mexican depictions of the plumed serpent, but the connections are clear.
