Description
The face of Kalief Browder appears through a distressed and peeling surface.
Kalief Browder, a martyr of the U.S. Justice System, born on May 25, 1993, and committed suicide on June 6, 2015, was a 22-year-old African American who was arrested for robbery of a backpack and imprisoned without a trial for three years. His case has been used by activists calling for reform of New York City's criminal justice system.
Though his story was covered in some degree by local press after his release, Browder was also profiled in The New Yorker in October 2014 for being held for three years on Rikers Island without a trial for allegedly stealing a backpack. The exposure of his case became the impetus for proposed reforms in the New York City criminal justice system.
Browder was arrested at age 16, in May 2010, while walking home on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. The case was dismissed and Browder was released in June 2013 after numerous postponements of his case. --Source: Wikipedia
