If only this old boat could talk! Beautiful portrayal of the Mary D. Hume!

James Eddy replied:

Thank you Gary. I don't know if she talked but I think I heard a whisper.

Great Colors, Light and Composition of this Marvelous art-Photo. I wonder what became of the lives, hopes and dreams of all the people who 'sailed' on her ? :-)

Awesome image and history Andrew! L/F

Fantastic image.

Wow, what a fabulous image of this amazing historic boat!! First set sail in 1881...wow, that's just incredible!! I read a few comments below that she is in much worse shape now and she probably doesn't have much longer...I'm so glad you got to shoot her while she was still in pretty decent looking shape! This is a wonderful tribute to her!!! Beautiful sunset going on behind her, too!!! :)))vf

James Eddy replied:

Wow 1881 - she's lasted well. Beautiful perspective at sunset.

What a great documentary image, James. You have so very well captured in its present state a sense of the ship's grandeur in days past. f/l

Artist's Description

Possibly one of the most photographed scenes in Gold Beach, Oregon, the Mary D. Hume sits at the mouth of the Rogue River. She was built right in Gold Beach and set sail January 21, 1881. She was a freighter hauling goods to and from San Francisco. She was a whaler, a fishing boat and a tug boat. She even sank once. In the summer of 1978 she traveled under her own power to her final resting place just a short distance from where she was born. The last few years have taken their toll. This is my tribute to her in her sunset years. This photo was the Best Of Show at the 2011 Lassen County Fair. (c) James Q. Eddy Jr.

About James Eddy

In my earlier bio I tried to describe a little about who I am and what I like to photograph. I debated whether any further information was necessary to describe me. Giving it more thought I suppose it is important to tell more of my story. In March 2008 I was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. Shortly before that I hemorrhaged in my eyes causing small blind spots in both. I spent a good part of that year in and out of the hospital receiving treatments. Today I am in remission and doing well. I still have blind spots that cause some difficulty in seeing. I have heard it said that going through something like that makes you see life a little differently. Although I had a pretty good outlook about life, I do see things...
