Description
Two friends celebrate summertime joy near a garden of flowers. A girl and her cat understand one another perfectly.
When we are children, we understand an important truth that we are in danger of losing as we grow into adulthood: our friends do not have to be our same age, in our same social group, or indeed, as in the case of The Teal Umbrella, human beings as we are.
The Teal Umbrella invites us back to the moment in our childhood when we did not judge the way that we do as adults. Unfortunately, in these days when we shove children into scheduled school situations at a younger and younger age, children are taught – at a younger and younger age – the “importance” of their peer group, a lesson that they unfortunately take with them throughout their lives.
When they are younger, they look at the clothes and actions of the others around them, and compare them to their own. When they are older, they are even more accomplished at looking at the clothes of others, the actions of others, the cars of others, the houses of others, the significant others of others, the job positions of others, and the bank accounts (or perceived bank accounts) of others and comparing them to their own – generally with the result that they think less of themselves in comparison.
But when we are young, young children – so young that we frequently cannot remember how we thought – we do not fall into this trap. And because young children do not fall into this trap, it is worth looking at them, studying them, watching them, questioning why they do what they do and think the way they think, and learning from what we see.
After all, the little girl in The Teal Umbrella is happy with who she is and what she is doing. Is that not something we would like as adults as well?
