Description
This was the placard I carried on October 20th 2018, when I and about 700,000 other people, over 1% of the population of the UK, turned up in London to march in support of a People's Vote on the final Brexit deal. In the first referendum, nothing was clear about what the final outcome would be. Nothing was said about problems such as the threat of a return to a hard border on the island of Ireland, with the grim possibility even of a return to the Troubles. We were told there would be £350 million a week extra for the NHS, when in fact the NHS will have less money and there will be shortages of doctors, nurses and medicines. We were told a trade deal with the EU would be easy, when in fact it is looking as if there will be no deal at all. Major employers will leave the UK and move to mainland Europe. We will be poorer and weaker as a country. The 700,000 who marched, and many, many more who were with us in spirit, want a chance to vote again in the full knowledge of what we are voting for. Democracy did not stop in 2016: we deserve the chance to confirm or reject that earlier decision. I believe that the will of the people has changed.
