Description
I grew up knowing that these cherries were know as Royal Anne cherries. The Royal Ann, known as a Napoleon, looks the same, is used for canning and for making marischino cherries. I grew up eating those but they are different from the Rainier.
In 1952 Harold Fogle of Washington State University, cross a Bing and Van cultivars and developed the Rainier. He named them after Mount Rainier. These are the ones we eat today, so I am not sure where I would find Royal Ann cherry anymore.
The artist, Mary Deal, is also an award-winning author of mystery/thrillers, a short story collection and writers' reference books. Read about it here:
