Description
The Topo is a large fishing and transport boat native to Chioggia, near Venice. Designed for sailing locally, generally on shoals, it has survived until today: The wider Topi continue to furrow the region of Burano, without sail but with an engine. Others have only one sail. Generally speaking, it is a flat-bottomed fishing boat of the Adriatic, with two masts and an almost horizontally extending front end. Its rigging with auric sails is very simple to stir, so that only two men are enough to maneuver it. Their decoration is rather lively, from the sails to the hull, with geometrical patterns reccurents. The Topo apparently appeared at the very end of the 17th century. The modern Topi are simply lagoon boats.
The Topo has a silhouette and a rigging that make it confused with the Trabaccolo. The latter, however, is much larger and more sea-going. It was encountered in the Adriatic, but more a racing boat more than for fishing...
