Description
This beautiful tree swallow is relaxing in the bright sunshine on a wonderful spring day in Wisconsin. A tree swallow is a common nester in tree cavities or nest boxes, especially near water. It is the only green-backed swallow regularly seen in the upper half of North America. Beautiful bluish green head and green back, these swallows are great fliers that can turn sharply and are not afraid to get very close to humans. They migrate south to Mexico in winter. They have a cheerful tone which is very pleasant. The tree swallow can be found in wet habitats like flooded meadows, marshes, lakeshores, streams, and open areas near woods. These birds are a great addition to any yard as they eat flying insects like beetles, horseflies, moths, grasshoppers, and dragonflies. The search for insects over land and water and catch their prey in the air. In the winter, they may feed on berries.
