Located on the south coast of England, this iconic landmark is also a popular seaside destination. Built by the Eastbourne Pier Company for 15,000 as a landing stage for steamers, it allowed the gentry of the day to 'walk on water'. (And the water was high: in 1877, a storm washed the pier away, so it had to be rebuilt higher). Since that time, it has been repaired many times. While some alterations over time have also been made, its Victorian charm has been retained.
This pier often filled in for the Brighton pier in cinema productions, such as Agatha Christie's Poirot episode "Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan" and the film Brighton Rock.
This is a favorite place of mine, often visited en route to Beachy Head, when we stop to walk the pier and (usually) have a snack before we carry on. The waves, sun, sand and sky around us, and the flocks of gulls overhead, always leave us with happy memories that linger.

Eastbourne really isn't in the tropics; in fact, the climate is anything but tropical in southern England. But, there are palm trees near the pier, and it really was a hot summer this year past, so I couldn't resist the title as well as the vintage tones. Enjoy the scene while the hot weather lasts :)

I love this magnificent pier with the beautiful building and golden domes. And a wonderful framing of the pier by the palms. Enjoyed your description, Connie! Tropical Eastbourne is a fun title. l/f/tw

There this past summer, a great new rebuild of an area that had a fire... picnic tables now installed, too (something for everyone there) ... ; glad you appreciate the bit of humour in the title, Cheryl; & thank you so much!:))

Connie, when I read your personal connection to the Eastbourne Pier the whole concept and work took on new life. Tropics?? I love the whimsical title too. It all works :)) Thomas
Connie Handscomb replied:
