Romance is in the air as a couple in love dances by the lake, in the gentle light of twilight. The harmonious strains of violin music are the backdrop to this dance of romance, and festive lights shining from the tree branches add to the sense of mystery and intrigue.

As with all good representational paintings, Twilight Romance tells a story – but the details of that story are open to the imagination of the viewer. Who is the violinist, we wonder, and does the couple even know that he is there?

Or are they on their way from a celebration or fete, and heading to the rowboat they stop for one last, long, meaningful time together before one or both or them get into the boat?
