Description
Tycho supernova remnant (SN 1572), X-ray image. This expanding cloud of hot gas and dust formed following a supernova observed by Tycho Brahe in 1572. It is expanding at thousands of kilometres per second, impacting the interstellar medium to form X-rays. The shockwave (blue, including new observations of striped areas) is marked by high-energy X-rays, and debris (red) by lower energy X-rays. This image was obtained by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. SN 1572 has a diameter of about 16 light years and is located around 7500 light years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia. Image published in 2011.
