The ukulele is synonymous but I believe it originated in Portugal and was brought to the island by imported laborers. The UliUli is made in Hawaii and all of the Pacific islands. It is a hollowed-out gourd with the dried seeds or small stones inside to make it rattle. Hawaiians adorned everything with feathers. Today, ukuleles come in all sizes and tones. Likewise, the UliUli has many variations, not just in sizes but feathers as well. One of the largest of the Uli instruments is the Ipu Heke which is a double gourd. Oftentimes when the proper plant cannot be found suitable for the double, then two grouds are fastened together.
