Sun setting on a pasture with cows grazing in the field in early autumn.

When I was growing up, it was common for farmers to put their cows in the barn at night. It was done at the end of the day. After a hard days work in the pasture eating grass the cows would form a procession and return to the barn where they were often fed a little corn. in troughs. One could hear them moo as they walked to the barn. A pleasant sound for me. which could be heard off in the distance in most rural towns. And the saying "until the cows come home" had more significance then. I don't think they come home anymore. They are left in the fields all night and all day. Rain or shine.
