The Petrifed Forest Member of Petrified Forest National Park consists of thick sequences of reddish mudstones and brown sandstone layers. This member is exposed in the Flattops and the red hills of the Painted Desert. The Black Forest Bed, part of the Petrifed Forest Member north of Kachina Point, has been determined to be about 209 million years old. Kachina Point marks a boundary line between the Painted Desert area and the Petrified Forest area of the park.

I photographed this Utah Juniper from the rim at Kachina Point. The lone tree standing tall against the 200 million year old sandstones, buttes and lava flows that make up the park speaks to me of survival in the face of unalterable change.
