Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest state park in Nevada and was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968. It covers nearly 42,000 acres, dedicated in the mid 1930's.Valley of Fire and its fiery sandstone formations, particularly in early morning hours and late afternoon, attracts many visitors from Las Vegas as it is only 50 miles away. The elevation of this wonderful gem is between 2,000 and 2,600 ft. This popular park is adjacent to Lake Mead Recreational Area and the confluence of the Virgin River. This particular area of Valley of Fire is referred to as "The Wave" since it appears very similar in appearance, not scale, to the famous Paria Wilderness formation. Nonetheless, it is a challenging hike in the hot summer sun but is now signed for ease of finding this little gem.
