Description
Photo taken near Leadville, Colorado. There is a historical marker near this site that says "In this valley, the towns of Robinson, Kokomo, and Recen existed. Kokomo was the site of the highest Masonic Lodge in the USA - Corinthian Lodge No. 42. Elevation 10,618 feet."
In the late 1800's this valley bustled with the commotion of three mining towns. Fortunes were made and dreams were crushed in the ore hauled from the mountains. Kokomo was the commercial hub of the Ten Mile Mining District, where gold and silver drove the mining boom. The town never recovered from the fire that destroyed all but two buildings in 1881.
By 1950, the area was virtually deserted as the mining boom busted. The valley is now filled with tailing from the Climax Mine--a fitting burial for the towns born of mining. This ghost town is now often referred to as The Valley of Ghosts.
