Description
Queen Victoria was born in 1819. She inherited the throne aged 18 and was Queen of the United Kingdom from 1837 until her death in 1901. Known as the Victorian era, her reign of over 63 years was longer than that of any of her predecessors.
Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840. Their children married into royal families across the continent, earning Victoria the name: "the grandmother of Europe". After Albert's death in 1861, Victoria plunged into deep mourning.
The artist wanted to portray her during this period, at the age of 43, with a brave smile, yet distant look of lament. She wears the dark mourning velvet coat as she was shown to wear in later portraits and her flowers are cast downwards. This subtly emotional, yet beautiful, portrait of this Queen, with its beautiful frame will enhance any traditional home or public area.
This painting on board in oil and acrylic is very large. Its width is 40 inches (102cm) and the height is 56 inches (142cm).
