Description
"Vintage Ford in Mt. Vernon, Texas" by Catherine Sherman.
A vintage Ford pickup truck shows off its classic lines when visiting the town square of Mt. Vernon, Texas.
In the background, is the Franklin County, Texas, courthouse, which was was built in 1912 and was rededicated after restoration in 2014. The courthouse, built in the Classic Revival style, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, along with the jail.
Mt. Vernon was established in 1849 on land donated by Stephen and Rebecca Keith, and a public square was surveyed in the 24-acre plat. When Franklin County was created in 1875, Mt. Vernon was voted county seat, and a wooden building northeast of the square was used as the first courthouse.
