Description
Vintage Gramophone - 01 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The gramophone was invented in 1870 and patented in 1877 by Emile Berliner, an American inventor, but of German origin. The ideation has origins in the mid-nineteenth century, when the phonograph was created, or the precursor instrument, the prototype, which led in the years following the invention of the gramophone.
The phonograph, the instrument that had the function of recording sounds coming from the outside, was instead designed by Leon Scott in 1857. Subsequently, Charles Cros proposed a modification, making innovation, as he succeeded in conceiving that the recording could be in turn also reproduced by the same instrument, thanks to the technique of photoengraving.
In turn, in the years to come, Thomas Edison improved its functionality, in fact the recording took place thanks to the help of the common foil, this was the invention of the phonograph. But all this is subsequently studied and improved by Emile Berliner.
Berliner developed an innovative and better photoengraving technique than Cros, by recording on a grooved metal disk. All this is still documented, there is even the recording of the voice of the same Leon Scott, who made a test record. The latter dates back to the year 1860, which can be found and heard on the web. The recording is a well-known French song, "Al chiaro di luna", managed to identify, thanks to innovative techniques only in the recent year 2009.
However, the history of the gramophone is absolutely fascinating, in fact, even if each invention is attributed to a different inventor, all three have been given the name of inventors of the sound. As everything that is done from the first instrument up to the refinement proposed by Berliner, leads to the creation of a piece of history, the first that then led to everything that exists today.
Scott, Berliner and Edison have changed the world of musical entertainment thanks to the reproduction and diffusion of sound. But it is also worth mentioning Graham Bell, as he also made a contribution, going, many years later, to perfect the engraving technique, implementing the transversal technique.
