Description
Virginia, New Netherland and New England. 17th-century map of the north-eastern region of North America, showing the colonies that existed at the time. The map shows New Netherland (centre), with Virginia to the south and New England to the north. New Netherland existed from 1614 to 1667, and again from 1673 to 1674, when it was lost to England, becoming part of the English (later British) colonies. The region later became the colonies and then states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut. This map shows coastal features and major rivers, with the future New York City and Long Island at centre. It is a pen-and-ink in watercolour, with Dutch and Flemish text labels. It was produced by Dutch cartographer Johannes Vingboons (c.1616-1670) and published in around 1639.
