The artist visited the place where pioneer wagon trains on the Overland Trail (not to be confused with the Oregon Trail further north) forded the North Platte. After a treacherous decent down the cliffs and bluffs on the east side, they crossed to a small island, where they might rest before continuing on to the western bank and across the vast expanse toward the Red Desert. A small pioneer graveyard is on the east bank, a Native American burial ground on the west.
I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...
