Description
WASHOE CITY, NEVADA
Washoe Citys star burned bright! Because of her abundance of water and cheap fuel, 10 quartz mills carrying 281 stamps sprang up to work the ores of the Comstock. Fifteen saw mills that cut 1,300,000 feet of lumber per month, furnished timber for Virginia City and the mines, the returning wagons bringing back ores. Her population reached a peak of 7,000. Washoe City had drawn many professional men.
She would be second to none! Those were exciting days. The elite flocked down from Virginia City for the city life--the gentlemen in their frock coats and toppers and the ladies in their latest fashioned silks. THEN IT WAS OVER! The completion in 1869 of the V & T Railroad from Carson City to Virginia City could carry wood and ores much cheaper than the freighters. In 1868 the Central Pacific railroad came down the Truckee River and caused the birth of a new town named Reno. Reno grew fast and cast envious eyes on the seat of justice. In 1871 the County Seat was transferred to Reno, Nevada by an Act of Legislature. With her County Seat gone, her population went too. Fire on the night of April 28, 1873 burned many of her buildings. Today, Washoe City, once the pride of Washoe County, has one building standing as a monument to her former glory. Washoe City is located 18 miles south of Reno and located on Highway 395. The ruins are visible from the highway . However, local inquiry will be to your advantage as town is in total ruin.
