Description
The view east from atop Waterrock Knob, looking down over the rhododendron that is just starting to bloom in the very upper elevations of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Waterrock Knob Visitors Center, located at milepost 451.2 along the Blue Ridge Parkway, is a must stop along the North Carolina section of the scenic drive. At an elevation of 5820, it is the highest visitors center on the Parkway and has nearly a 360 degree view! From here, you are at the heart of the Southern Highlands with views of all the major southern mountain ranges: the Great Balsams, Smokies, Cowees, Nantahalas, Blue Ridge Mountains, Newfound Mountains, Blacks, and Craggies.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is designated as an All American Road, the highest designation in the National Scenic Byway system. At 469 miles long, the Parkway begins at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, winds its way through North Carolina terminating at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Along the way, it provides spectacular mountain and valley vistas, quiet pastoral scenes, sparkling waterfalls, and colorful flower and foliage displays.
