This painting was developed from not one of my best plein air paintings, photos, and memory from three hours staring at the view while painting en plein air.The scene is of the gorge in Whetstone Gulf State Park, Lowville NY.Park literature describes the gorge as one of the most spectacular scenic views east of the Rocky Mountains. It is the main reason for the park's location, which has 2400 mostly undeveloped acres. There are a North (side) Trail and South Trail which encompass the gorge at the rim and total a 5.5 mile hike. If you start from the campground area at the bottom of the gorge you have quite a hill climb to this view as I learned on a preliminary trip. The top of the South Trail has a small parking area accessible by taking Corrigan Hill Road off West Road. Then you walk in about 25 minutes carrying all you painting gear as the trail is rocky and has a lot of root exposure, so not for lugging your stuff in with a cart.
