Description
White Italian grapes ripening on the vine watercolor art print. Early this Fall I visited the town of Lugano in Switzerland and stayed at the Hotel Lido Seegarten on the lake. Directly through the small lobby was a large arbor covering a seating area in front of the pool. Growing on this arbor were vines heavy with clusters of grapes. The effect of grapes growing directly overhead was nothing short of magical, and proves the point that not only are grapes wonderful for eating, juicing, and winemaking, but they are also a beautiful ornamental plant.
While I must confess that I didn't ask after the specific variety of grape growing at the hotel, I did do a little research upon returning home and discovered that the grapes were most likely one of two white varieties - either the Trebbiano or the Pinot Grigio.
The Trebbiano is the most common white variety in Italy and is grown almost everywhere. In one manifestation or another, it’s the backbone of numerous classic Italian white wines, such as Frascati. The main aroma and flavor descriptor of Trebbiano-based wines is that they smell and taste winey.
Pinot Grigio is the Italian name for the French variety Pinot Gris. Cultivation of this variety in northeastern Italy began more than a century ago with production on the increase since the late 1970’s because its wines have found such commercial success. These grapes most often make light-bodied, pale, high-acid wines.
