Artist's Description

Yuma County is the nation's third largest vegetable producer! With rich soil, water access and more than 350 days of sunshine a year, Yuma's produce feeds households nationwide. After the notorious summer heat, the temperature drops just enough to create the country's longest growing season. Yuma County is the winter lettuce capital of the world, supplying a whopping 90% of the nation's leafy vegetables between November and March. According to 2008-2009 agricultural statistics, the Yuma area also grows about 12,000 acres of broccoli, 3,500 acres of cauliflower, 6,800 acres of spinach and 3,000 acres of other vegetables. Orchards and vast melon patches stretch across the landscape. Not only is Yuma County Arizona's t...

About Robert Bales

I am a retired teacher, coach and athletic director. While my wife, Judy, and I were teaching she had a photo studio, and I had a dark room where I did black and white and color. Some was for the studio while most of it was just a hobby. When we retired in 2000, we sold our house in Eastern Washington and moved onto our boat, Last Class, and our motorhome. We sold Last Class a few years ago and bought a small house in Yuma, Arizona and bought another one in Emmett Idaho. Now we spend the summers in Emmett and the winters in Yuma. Over our 50 years of marriage, we have always had an interest in photography and both of us enjoy taking the photos for this site. I am heading to Yuma for the winter so I will off line some of the time for 3...
