In late July 1944, the Bottisham, Cambridgeshire-based 361st Fighter Group "Yellowjackets" was selected to be photographed for a series of 8th Air Force publicity stills for widespread distribution. 28-year-old Col. Thomas J. J. Christian, Jr., a West Point graduate and commanding officer of the 361st, 'volunteered' several of his pilots the morning of July 26th to accompany him as they made multiple formation and single-ship passes at a cameraman shooting from a 91st Bomb Group B-17 Flying Fortress above a thick English overcast. Perhaps not by accident, the bright yellow noses of the 361st glowed in the sunshine above the clouds, accenting the beautiful lines of the P-51 Mustangs and providing a sublime contrast to the serious mission of the 'Mighty Eighth' Air Force.
