Elk or wapiti (Cervus canadensis) range in forest and forest-edge habitat, feeding on grasses, plants, leaves, and bark. Male elk have large antlers which are shed each year. Elk have no upper front teeth. They are like goats and cows.
A bull will defend his harem of 20 cows or more from competing bulls and predators. It is only a mature bull that usually have large harems, and breeding success peaks at about eight years of age.
