Description
It's smooth sailing through aqua water reflecting the blue of the sky.
Though the water is a little choppy, bespeaking a strong breeze, the sky is blue amidst cumulus clouds, and the day is a perfect one to be out on the water in a wooden craft.
Zephyr, the artwork, invites the viewer to join the sailor in the sailboat and be part of this perfect day. There are no obligations to this day other than to keep the sailboat moving, to clip along at an adventurous pace and see the land go by. When that becomes too much, one weighs anchor and allows for a moment of calm and quiet, a time of thinking without having to concentrate on the movement of the boat, a reflective space in which to think great thoughts, or simply quiet ones.
Zephyr is a reminder to us that life is an adventure, and like any adventure, it has its different moments. Some of those moments are of intense movement, quick action, physical prowess and skill. Others of those moments are quiet moment, times in which one does nothing but think, because, in actuality, thinking is not nothing at all. Thinking is one of the greatest achievements we can make in a day.
We don’t see this, though, in “modern” society, “modern” society that worships activity and busyness and efficiency and the pursuit of profits for people and companies who will never make enough to be satisfied. In many ways, our inability to relax and allow quiet thoughts is a form of barbarism, a drive to conquer each minute of the day and make sure that it is properly docketed, reported, scheduled, and approved.
Take a moment, and leave the busyness behind. Step into Zephyr and feel the sun on your face, the breeze in your hair, the spray in the air.
(The painting Zephyr takes place in the Puget Sound waters of Washington State, between Port Townsend and Whidbey Island.)
Zephyr is featured in more than 35 Fine Art America groups.
