Artist's Description

Chris and I went here one weekend to visit a friend's house. We asked about the staircase and he said they hired a carpenter and only told the man, "we need a staircase leading down to the water that isn't straight down." Our friend said the guy just kept building and turning and building some more until he reached the water. When I saw it, I sketched it immediately. I didn't paint it until years later when I found the sketch, half faded and falling apart. Glad I found it in time.

Debra's acrylic paintings on canvas concentrate mostly on natural landscapes in vibrating colors while usually including an element of New England architecture. Her style borders between representational and abstract. The colors and lines of her paintings are inspired by Matisse during the Fauvist movement. The talents of several other artists she continues to draw upon are: William Henry Johnson, Lawren Harris, Alice Neel and Edward Hopper. Jazz and Blues music continue to be a force in her work.
