..I began my art career over 20 years ago in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful colonial town in central Mexico. It is an artist colony and has an atmosphere that brings out one's artistic feelings. I began doing portraits in watercolor but quickly changed to pastel. That has been my medium ever since. Wishing to learn from the best, I attended a two week workshop given by Daniel Greene., who is one of the finest portrait painters in the world. He continues to be my mentor today through his videos and books. During my time in San Miguel, I took many pictures of its people and places. These photographs have formed a rich treasury from which to paint. In the summer of 2012, I became enamored of the work of Wolf Kahn. His use of color was so awe inspiring, that I looked to my photographs of San Miguel for subject matter. This time my interest was color and not a precise rendering which is so important in portraiture. I began experimenting with different color combinations,, which is why you will see the same subject painted 3 and 4 times. My blue and gold paintings of San Miguel de Allende have a central theme - The Light of the Church shines on the rooftops, streets, and inhabitants of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Not starting out to give the paintings a religious theme, after viewing the completed artwork, the theme revealed itself to me. Interesting!
