I dabbled in art most of my life, but began to paint seriously in January of 1999. I am self taught, and work primarily in pastel. These last few years I have also begun to use mixed watermedia, painting in a pseudo-Seurat, pointillism style. I have had several shows, both at the local Art Center, and within gallery cooperatives with whom I was associated. I did local outdoor shows for three years. In 1996, I started a local life drawing group, the 'Nightlifers'. We meet weekly to practice drawing the human figure, primarily nudes. Many of our atelier members have been motivated by this experience - to begin painting, to change careers, to get art degrees - partly inspired by their regular association with fellow artists. I love land and waterscapes, and am especially drawn to water reflections because they allow me to veer away from my realistic roots to create some fun abstract color and shapes. I have a strong tendency toward being too detailed and tight in my work. Therefore I admire work that is what mine is not. Abstracts, and art that has the loose and /or painterly style I don't have. I also admire contemporary figurative work and abstract impressionist portraits After only a short time as a member of FAA, I have found that there are some unexpected and wonderful benefits of this membership that I have come to really enjoy. One is that I feel as if I have my own private gallery in my 'favorites' file. I look almost daily at those images, enjoying those I have selected. I am not tired of it yet. In addition, I have made contact with and had some conversations, however brief, with some interesting and very talented people. From all over the world. Since I am not selling, right now, these other, less tangible experiences, still keep me coming back. I like to see the new work coming in. So even if I live in this backwater, podunk place, I can be exposed to what is going on out there.
