I have a strong sense that “this is my time on earth. It had a beginning and it will have an ending. I share this time on earth with an abundance of other people.” Along with that is an intense sense of place. Most of my work is about these two concepts. The works say, “Here is this place, where I saw, breathed and absorbed the atmosphere. Here are some artifacts from other people who share my time on earth.”
I work with fabrics. Their colors and textures have filled my life, since I learned to sew at age 13. In high school I made all of my clothing including my prom dress and Easter coat. Now I use those sewing skills and love of fabric to make Studio Art Quilts: stitched collages of fabric, found objects and papers.
I use both hand embroidery and machine free motion stitching. I like the look of both.
I was a painter before turning to Studio Art Quilts, and some of that painterly sense remains.
My training includes a BA from Oberlin College, with a major in history (still a passion of mine), and a minor in studio art, and an MA from the University of Michigan in History of Art. I have taken numerous classes and workshops since then, in printmaking, painting, drawing, and the fiber arts.
I recently moved to the country to live on my husband family's farm in Berks County. We built our dream home here, with a spacious studio, and plenty of land to grow vegetables and flowers, plant native species, and host bees and bluebirds. I am a member of Studio Art Quilts Associates (www.SAQA.com), Berks Art Alliance (http://berksartalliance.com/), Art Plus Gallery (ArtPlusGallery.weebly.com), Hamburg Area Arts Alliance (https://www.facebook.com/Hamburgareaartsalliance), and Quiltessence Quilters Guild.
