The vast majority of Disneyland guests exploring the Rivers of the World on the world famous Jungle Cruise return to the dock without really being aware of what had just taken place. They climb aboard one of the riverboats, lured by the promise of the adventure of their lives, and ignore all signs of danger or wise thought. With no assurance of a safe or quick return they blissfully board the boat and entrust their possessions, lives and the lives of their families to a complete stranger. Caught up in the adventure, most are oblivious to the fact that they have been transported in time, to the year 1938, and that time itself has speeded up a million-fold (almost 400 times the speed of light). Their trip, which normally would take weeks or months, instead feels like about 8 minutes. You might say that this magical adventure began in the mind of a young British lad in the late 1800’s. Born into an age when stories of exploration were perhaps at their peak, Albert Falls dreamed of becoming an explorer himself. He eventually even became friends with Henry Stanley, the man who after searching for and finding the long lost missionary to Africa, uttered this most famous of understatements, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume.” Albert Falls was the first to go up the river but upon his release he soon realized his dream becoming the first to discover Adventureland and explore the Rivers of the World. One day as he rounded a bend in the river he spotted a beautiful waterfall and immediately proclaimed that he was naming it after himself…which he did…calling it “Schweitzer Falls”. In 1911 Dr. Falls established the Jungle Navigation Company in Adventureland, a cargo shipping business he established for the purpose of improving the way cargo moved up and down the jungle rivers for his fellow explorers and adventurers. His granddaughter, Alberta, was sent by her parents to live with him when she was eight years old. She came to regard the jungle as her home and the crewmembers her family. She eventually inherited the business from her grandfather but times they were a changing and the business began to decline. Fewer and fewer full-fledged expeditions were coming to the jungle and Adventureland was becoming more of a destination for greenhorn globetrotters. Then one of the skippers came up with the idea to use the boats for guided tours of the jungle to visitors. With the success of the Jungle Cruises came the need to feed guests. First, the home offices; then the crew’s mess hall; then the old family room and finally even Dr. Fall’s old meeting room were turned into dining rooms. Thus the Skipper Canteen was born. "Welcome aboard the World Famous Jungle Cruise! I'm Captain Mickey and I'll be your skipper, guide, and dancing instructor for the next nine to twelve weeks as we explore the Rivers of the World!" This was how I introduced myself to Disneyland guests to start their Jungle Cruise adventure. Now I make it possible for them to bring parts of the Rivers of the World into their homes to hang on their walls.
