Lowhead Dam Removal In Columbus Ohio USA
In late November 2013 a lowhead dam called the Main Street lowhead dam was removed from the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio. This lowhead dam removal also effects the confluence of the Olentangy River with the Scioto River. This is part of the Scioto Greenways Project, led by Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman. The stated goal is to create 33 acres of new green space, and a remake of the river area to a more natural and greener setting as it winds through downtown Columbus, Ohio. There will be both pluses and minuses to this whole process. My goal in this series of photos is to allow the viewer to see what happens when this action is taken, start to finish. The trash put in the river for decades by humans is visible, and the debris the construction workers put in to build the new river banks are visible in what I have documented. Pipes currently dump storm and sewage water drain into the river, what will become of those, especially in the summer in drought time? Sewer stink? Will we ever meet the EPA standards for water quality? Will new forms of flooding now happen downriver as other communities have built up their riverfront when the Main Street lowhead dam was in place? I will continue documenting the process for years, including the eventual goal of parkland, its usage, and what happens when it floods. Cost estimate is $35.5 million. Battelle and The Columbus Foundation also donated money for this project.
